We spent a fair bit of time at the start crafting the storyboard for our film. We did this together using post-it notes. We stuck with the main idea for the plot of the guy being abducted but it was a case of refining and knowing exactly how we wanted to communicate it, especially with the fact we were planning to bring footage together made by different animation techniques.
Although we weren't approaching it like the first See Hear project with abstract imagery being tightly in sync with sound, it was still crucial for us to know how long we wanted our shots for telling the story so that it all fitted together effectively.
If during animating we felt a shot felt was too dragged out, it would be a case of reassessing whether the lengths of the previous or upcoming shots could be modified so that it wouldn't screw up the timing for the whole film. We did this by having a rough, working animatic on Premiere Pro that could be edited whenever need be.
We divided up our workload by choosing areas of interest to develop in as well as playing to our strengths. This also meant that we could have a constant flow of work (layouts for guidance in stop-motion; whilst animating, backgrounds coloured and CGI footage created; completed stop-motion footage to post-production to begin compositing while animating/backgrounds ongoing). Our first plan for roles were
- Toby: CGI, VFX & Compositing
- Carwyn: Background & Layout Design
- Zoe: Model clothing & prop
- Grant: Model making
Finalised storyboard post-its
